The talisman of “Shalom”
Shalom Synagoue
Shalom is the synagogue in which Joseph Escapa, Chief Rabbi as from 1620, had achived to organize the Jews of Izmir into a community with rules, regulations and functions. In here, Rabbi Escapa also provided young Sabetay Zevi with religious education. But once Zevi declared himself Messiah, he got the ball running in the latter’s dismissal from Izmir. An inscription written in Hebrew by the building entrance indicates the synagogue as the only survivor of the fire in 1841. Known also as “El Kaal de la Tromba” (meaning the synagogue of the pump in Ladino), it was as well recognized as “El Kaal de los Aydinlis” since it was attended by the congregation arriving from the city of Aydın in 1920s.The relocated Tevah resembling a bow, the decorated ceiling, the marble painted columns, and the floral cushioned sofas along the walls create a strong feel of authencity in this synagogue.
