A life spanning over continents
Algaze Synagogue
My ancestors settled in Izmir in the 1640’s. They became notables of the city as prominent rabbis, cantors and music masters. Unsurprisingly, I inherited their musical talent. My fame spread in my own community, but also among the Muslim Turks. Many recognized me as a great composer, not only of the Jewish music but of Turkish classical music. As a philanthropist, an advocate of modernization of the Ottoman Empire, I took an interest in political affairs, too. A significant moment in my life came when I performed before Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.
From my hometown Izmir, I moved to Istanbul, then to Paris, France and finally to Montevideo, Uruguay. My life’s journey, much filled with music, ended up by 1950.
İshak Algazi was my name! The last well-known member of the Algazi Family, known to many by the synagogue that carries the same name.
