An unexpected serenity
La Sinyora Synagogue
The gate right next to Los Phorasteros Synagogue opens to a small oasis within the chaos of the very dense bazaar area. A large rectangular construction of stone and brick stands behind the outer walls. A short walk through an open-air corridor of high walls reaches the entrance of La Sinyora Synagogue. Opposite to the doors stands the Ehal, behind a marble arch crowned with carvings of the Ten Commandments. The Tevah, once in the center, stands as a dual application to the sides of this arch. Another one-of-a-kind example of art is at the lower part of the women’s gallery. Paintings of the synagogue building and the famous land trade caravan route (“Kervan Köprüsü” in Turkish) connecting Izmir to inland are depicted.
