The mysterious lady
La Sinyora Synagogue
Built in 1660s, La Sinyora Synagogue was burnt repeadtly and was rebuilt after the complete destruction in the fire of 1841. This synagogue was originally known as “Gveret”. Both words, “La Sinyora” (in Ladino) and “Gveret” (in Hebrew) meaning “the Lady”, clues to the possible appellation owner or donator of the synagogue. According to a popular city legend, the donator “Sinyora” is supposed to be Doña Gracia Mendes Nasi, a well known and wealthy Portuguese originated Jewish lady. However, her life cycle (1510-1569) does not fit in with the Jewish history of Izmir. On the contrary, a different story arises from some recent research. Accordingly, in 1664, a certain “Gveret” Lea, decides to migrate to the Holy land and donates her estate to the Jewish community of Izmir for the establishment of the synagogue.
