The first Hasidim
Maramureș - Hasidic Trail
The first Hasidim in Sighet were the followers of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kosow. After the split of the Kosow Hasidism (1854) the majority of the Hasidim in Sighet followed Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager who set up his court in Vishnitz (Bukovina then) today’s Ukraine. In this context, another brand of Hassidism reached Sighet through the Teitelbaum family. The next years that the Teitelbaum rabbis were active in Sighet, they became very popular, winning over the hearts of many with their strong personality, traits, talents and personal charismas. The primary influence of the new Hassidism in Sighet remained within the bounds of the town and their influence over the next century grew roots for the future to be the Satmar dynasty.
