Paganini and the Songs of the Martyrs
Săliște-Songs and prayers
The tragically ended Jewish life from Maramureș was kept alive after the war through music. Ionu lu Grigore from Săliște, also called Paganini, was one of the guardians of the traditional Jewish music played in Maramureș. He was one of the Romanians who began playing from an early age at the Jewish weddings and learned the tunes of traditional Jewish music. Jewish tunes of Hasidic music from Maramureș were collected and documented by the famous Max Eisikovits. When in Maramureș, asking one of the Rabbis for help, the Rabbi addressed him a single question: „Tzitzes hot ier?” (Are you wearing tzitzot)? When replied negatively, the rabbi turned his back on Eisikovits. He immediately understood that there was nothing he could do but return for help with him wearing a proper talit. „Las mir zeen”(”Let me see them!”) replied the rabbi before he would accept to help Eisikovits on his research about the Hasidic music.
