A day-care centre for children (11 Grodzka Street)
Dawna żydowska Ochronka dla Sierot i Starców - ul.Grodzka 11
The offices of the Jewish Community as well as the Home for Orphans and the Elderly were located in the building at 11 Grodzka Street, which used to be a parish house until the late 19th century. The place, well equipped for the time, usually provided care for a dozen or so elderly people in the interwar period. After the outbreak of WWII, when a few thousand refugees had arrived in the city, the place looked after 72 children and 10 elderly people (September 1940), and the number of children in need kept growing. The office of the Jewish Community was converted into the Judenrat (Nazi nominated Jewish Council). All children from the orphanage, along with three teachers, were taken by the Germans to death pits, in the modern-day district of Tatary, which had been prepared beforehand, and were shot there. This took place on 24 March 1942 during the liquidation of the ghetto. A March of Memory, leaves from the orphanage to the execution site on every anniversary of this tragic event. The participants include Lublin school students.
