Central Committee of Polish Jews - 4 Noworybna Street
Centralny Komitet Żydów Polskich - Noworybna 4
We can head to the Fish Market (Plac Rybny) now. The house at 4 Noworybna Street was the seat of the Central Committee of Polish Jews and the Jewish Historical Commission from early August 1944. These two institutions were the first Jewish organisations that tried to help Holocaust survivors and collected their testimonies after the war. Six of the survivors’ accounts recorded then, the oldest of which bears the date of 2 August 1944, are deposited in the collection of the Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre Centre. Transferred to Łódź in March 1945, the Jewish Historical Commission collected almost four thousand Holocaust survivors’ testimonies for the first three years of its existence. It was converted into the Jewish Historical Institute in May 1947, which continues to function in Warsaw until today.
