The pamphlets were addressed to the uneducated masses. Many were published anonymously to evade censorship and personal attacks while giving the impression that they expressed public thoughts. The authors were scholars, theologians, bell-founders, weavers, furriers, bakers, gunsmiths and women. The production was heavily one-sided. The Catholic convert Georg Witzel complained that his printer refused for a whole year to print his manuscript despite his promises. Erasmus noted that among the Germans it was hardly possible to sell anything except Luther’s writings.
