Women in charge
Reformation Women
The Reformation was a period of profound changes on all levels of society. Women were generally curtailed by law and custom but there were opportunities for ambitious individuals to leave their mark. Power brokers behind the scenes, strong-willed monarchs, religious leaders, or nobles striving to bring about social and cultural change, gifted women in Europe and the colonies fought against prejudice and male dominance to alter the religious, social, and political conditions. Personal wealth, keen intellect, or political influence were tools that allowed women to exercise an influence beyond what was considered proper or acceptable.
