Tadeusz Wieniawski (1798-1884), a doctor and social activist, was born as Wolf Helman to a poor Jewish family. He converted to Catholicism in 1828 and adopted a name derived from that of Wieniawa, his birthplace. He married Regina Wolff (1808-1884) in 1833, who came from a well-known Warsaw Jewish family. He had eight sons, of whom Henryk (1835-1880) became a world-renowned violin virtuoso and composer, Józef (1837-1912) was a pianist and composer, Aleksander (1837-1916) became an opera singer, while Julian (1834-1912) was a writer.The Wieniawski family lived in Lublin from 1842, initially in the house located in the Old Town at 17 Rynek (Market Square) and then at 20 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street after 1850.On the building at 17 Rynek Street there is a plaque reminding that in this house, in 1835, the brilliant violinist Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880) was born. The building is the seat of the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Lublin.
