Litewski Square
Plac Litewski
Litewski Square with its beautiful fountains, is a popular meeting point and a venue of public ceremonies and cultural events. According to tradition, the place earned its name due to the fact that the Lithuanian nobles camped here during the session of the Sejm (or Parliament) that introduced the Polish-Lithuanian Union in 1569. The union, signed in Lublin, establishing the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania, is commemorated by an obelisk erected in this place in 1827, in lieu of an older one funded by King Sigismund Augustus in the 16th century. The obelisk has been granted the European Heritage Label by the European Commission.
