Jaakow Kopelman ben Jehuda ha-Lewi died on Saturday, on the 23rd day of Sivan 5301 according to the Jewish calendar (i.e. June 18, 1541), and was buried on the next day.This matzevah is the oldest preserved tombstone in the Jewish cemeteries in Poland.The inscription in Hebrew reads:1. Grief and a mournful song I shall raise, crying2. and with tears I shall sing upon the one, who3. is buried here. Gaon, our teacher, lord, master4. Kopelman, Jaakow of the tribe of Levi5. his name. And it has its meaning.6. Proficient in the wisdom of all7. books, especially the book of six8. orders, and who promoted Torah9. as well as he? And who will manifest10. his glory? He, mighty with knowledge of Torah,11. a precious cornerstone,12. the throne is sealed with his name. Mighty,13. noble Jaakow, the son of Jehuda14. of Levi, blessed be his memory. He died on 13 Sivan15. and was buried on Sunday, 301 by a short reckoning.
