One of the most often visited graves in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Lublin is the ohel of Jaakow Icchak Horowic, Hasidic tzaddik known as the Seer of Lublin.Jaakow Icchak Horowic was the student of Dow Ber from Międzyrzecze and Elimelech from Leżajsk, and the teacher of many Hasidic tzaddik, among others, the founder of the Kock and Przysucha dynasties. From 1974 he lived and taught in Lublin, leading the house of prayer on Szeroka Street. He was renowned from his perspicacity and the ability to foresee the future. Many events from his life, and also mysterious circumstances of his death are shrouded in a hagiography legend, described among others by Martin Buber in his books “Gog and Magog” and “Tales of the Hasidim”.He died on August 15, 1815, according to the Jewish calendar on the 9th day of Av, 5575, on the day of the Tisha B’Av holiday which is the anniversary of the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. Tzaddik’s death has occurred as a result of the injury he suffered a few months earlier, after falling out the window from the floor of his tenement house, while celebrating “Rejoicing of the Torah” (Simchat Tora). Hasidim say that the demon threw him out the window.
