Chevra Nosim Synagogue / The Lublin Jews Hall of Memory - Lubartowska 10
Synagoga Chewra Nosim i siedziba TSKÅ» - Lubartowska 10
The upper floor of the building at 10 Lubartowska Street (no. 4 before WWII) houses the former Synagogue Chevra Nosim (or Society of Bearers of Corpses). The Chevra Nosim was one of the three burial brotherhoods operating in Lublin, apart from the Chevra Kadisha (Hebrew for Sacred Society) and the Chesed Shel Emet (Hebrew for an act of loving kindness). The synagogue was among the most popular houses of prayer in Lublin.Someone would come to pray, (…) someone else to study, still another one to talk and at the same time warm up by the big, heated stove. You could always find various city types here, tradesmen, craftsmen, carriers, and simple, old and grey-haired Jews. (…) People come and go all day round, continuously, to the extent that one gains the impression of being at a large train station from which trains leave consecutively in various directions. (…)When you come here on Friday night or on Saturday, the atmosphere of Shabbat peeks out from every corner.“Chevre Noysim Beysmedresh”, in: Lubliner Tugblat, no. 36, 10 February 1939, found in: Adam Kopciowski, Wos hert zich in der prowinc?Chevra Nosim was the only functioning synagogue in Lublin after the city was liberated in 1944. At the same time, the place was the seat of the local branch of the Jewish Social and Cultural Association. The Lublin Jews Hall of Memory has also been located here since 1987. The original interior hosts cultural events and displays the exhibit “We Are Here”, telling the story of the Lublin Jewish community after WWII. Prior telephone arrangement is required to see the place (tel. +48 602 473 118).
