Brother Endres
Leading Reformers
Andreas Karlstadt (1486-1541) performed the first reformed Communion service on Christmas Day 1521. He did not elevate the Eucharist, he wore secular clothing, and he spoke aloud in German rather than whispering the words of Communion in Latin. The communicants took the bread and wine themselves instead of receiving it from Karlstadt. A few weeks later the Wittenberg city council authorized the removal of imagery from churches, affirming the changes introduced by Karlstadt. In 1523 he called himself Brother Endres and worked as a farmer so as not to burden the poor. As a pastor he allowed open debates with the common people.
