The orphanage
Allatini Boys’ Orphanage
This building was constructed at the end of the 19th century as a private mansion. In 1917 the Jewish Community rented the building, and finally bought it in 1929 in order to house the Carlo Allatini Boys’ Orphanage. If you’ve been paying close attention, you’ll know what happened in 1917. Indeed, the Great Fire destroyed yet another major feature of Jewish culture. It was rebuilt and until 1943, 50 children were living there. During the Nazi Occupation, it was abandoned and the resident children as well as the staff were sent to the concentration camps. After the liberation and until 1972, the year of its sale, it housed families of Holocaust survivors. The new owner transformed it into a school, and today, it is recognized as a listed building.
