The Allatini family
Allatini Boys’ Orphanage
In the 18th century a number of Italian Jewish families from Livorno moved to Salonika to grow their businesses as they were excluded from the heavy taxes imposed by the Ottoman authorities. Among these families, known as Francos, was the Allatini family, which became one of the most important and wealthiest in town, contributing to the industrial and financial progress of Salonika. Moise and his son Lazaro were the first members of the family to arrive at the end of the 18th century. Lazaro’s son then founded the Allatini mills, a tobacco factory, a ceramics factory and a brewery. With his brothers David-Darius and Salomon, they founded branches across Europe. The Fratelli Allatini, as they were known, supported the Salonikan Jewish community, funding charity and education. During the Italo-Turkish War of 1911, the Ottoman authorities shut down the business of the Italian citizens, and the family was forced to flee.
