Memorial Jewish Cemetery
The sculpted figures you see here were placed here in 1985 and were created by East German artist Will Lammert. This is where the Jewish old age home stood from the 1840s until it was bombed during the Second World War.No Jews were killed during the Allied bombing simply because those still alive had already been sent off to be murdered.Let’s keep in mind that from 1933, when the Nazis came to power, until around 1940, well more than 100,000 of Berlin’s Jews managed to flee from Germany.Of the tens of thousands who did not get away, it is estimated 55,000 were collected in places just like this, carted off to railyards and stations, and sent off to ghettos, concentration camps and death camps.Very few survived and very few of those who did survive chose to live in Germany again.
