Jewish kindergarten
Jewish kindergarten
This is the address for the Jewish kindergarten—obviously its not the original building--which opened its doors in 1895 and took in children from the ages of three to fourteen. The older children arrived in the afternoons, after classes in regular schools, and this is where working mothers sent their children during the day. With a practical bent toward education, even the youngest children were taught how to sew and prepare basic foods.Sala and Martin Kochmann were born in Poland, emigrated to Berlin and were both teachers in this school. They were both members of the ill-fated anti-Nazi Herbert Baum Group which staged an arson attack on a propaganda exhibition in Berlin in May, 1942. The entire group was rounded up and executed. A plaque for the two of them was erected here during the communist decades.
