New Marketplace (Nowy Plac Targowy)
Nowy Plac Targowy
We enter the marketplace situated to the left of the passage. More than two hundred years ago a pond, in documents referred to as "Za Żydy", which gave its name to Nadstawna Street (the name of the street Nadstawna means “over the pond” in Polish) was located there. In 1817 the pond was drained and replaced with an English landscape park, which was soon turned into a marketplace with kosher butcheries set up along the banks of the Czechówka river. In 1938-1939 a modernistic market hall (now a Społem shop) was built in this place, officially called the New Marketplace. However, a market continues to operate next to the hall. Among other things you can buy there: clothes, shoes and fresh food products directly from local farmers.
