The sixth Jewish school
The Sixth Jewish school
The walls of this building would understand us perfectly if we suddenly started speaking Yiddish. Here, the sixth Jewish school was located. All subjects except Belarusian and Russian were taught in Yiddish. Blyakhman Aron Fadeevich was the director, Kish taught geography, Vera Iosifovna Shub taught physics and mathematics, Pavlyuchenko taught Belarusian. The school existed until September 1, 1937. Then it became Belarusian. Jewish schools in Belarus were liquidated. There were three Jewish schools in Polotsk in the twenties and thirties. Many honored people graduated from the sixth school, for example, the famous artist Gordon. Many of them continued their studies at Jewish technical schools in Vitebsk and Minsk. The education was good, and many pupils were admitted to institutes. Moses Abramovich Sushchin, a resident of Polotsk, remembered his studies at this school. Eight people from this school on September 1, 1937 came to school number 9 - the best at that time in Polotsk. Its director was the Russian language teacher with teaching experience dating back to pre-revolutionary times. As a form of greeting, he asked the boys to write a dictation. The next day he said that the students of the sixth school wrote better than those who had already studied here under his supervision.
