Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) was the leader of the Reformation in Switzerland. He raised issues with the custom of fasting, clerical marriage, and the use of iconic images. He published his ideas and confronted the Church’s hierarchy but his beliefs spread throughout the Swiss Confederation and divided the cantons along religious lines. The demand for arbitration within the protestant movement resulted in the Marburg Colloquy (1529), a conference to reconcile the differing views between Luther and Zwingli. The two sides found consensus on 14 points but failed to reach an understanding on the issue of the sacrament of Holy Communion.
