Calvin believed that God knew from the beginning of time who would be saved and who would be condemned. Good works could not alter His decision. The world was full of opportunities to sin but only those destined not to be saved actually sinned. Good behaviour was a sign that the person belonged to the elect that God had selected for eternal life. Calvinist church buildings were plain. People sat on long wooden benches and there were no paintings, statues, or stained glass windows. The minister preached from a pulpit in the middle of the room. Calvin preached over 2000 sermons while in Geneva: twice on Sundays and many times during the week.
