Spanish Civil war
Placa St Filip Neri
We are standing in Sant Felip Neri square. At first glance, this wonderful square is seen as a tranquil space, however it bears the scars of one of the most devastating attacks of the Civil War in Barcelona which caused 42 deaths, most of whom children taking refuge in the square’s convent. In the hands of the Republican Generalitat, The Sant Felip Neri Church served as a refuge for children from the neighborhood and other parts of the state who were fleeing the war. On the morning of January 30, 1938, the Italian fascist air force, allied with Franco, uninterruptedly bombing the city of Barcelona, from 9:00 to 11:20 a.m.
