Calle Salomo ben Adret
Corner of Sant Sever and Carrer B.Adret
Solomon ben Adret, (1235-1310), the Rashba, student of the great Nahmanides of Girona, served at Barcelona’s Synagogue Major for 50 years. Adret gained fame for his response, receiving thousands of advisory questions from all over Europe. Adret was an important source of Halakhatic advice, writing Torat HaBayit, a manual on kashrut (dietary laws) and other religious laws that are observed at home. Today the main street of El Call pays homage to this great rabbi, however this change happened only a few years ago. Before that, the street name was Sant Domenech del Call, a brutal reminder of the assault that began on August 5, 1391 and lasted until August 8, the day of San Domènec, when for days, people were attacked, property and documents were looted and destroyed, and several hundred Jews were killed. At the request of the Jewish communities and with the support of the City Council, the street was renamed in 2018. In the words of the first deputy mayor of the Barcelona City Council, Gerardo Pisarello, “the street recalled a fateful event, a massacre against the Jewish community and was unacceptable in a city where the Jewish community, today, has an important presence and is very active. Renaming the street after Salomó Ben Adret, the great Rabbi and Talmudist of the 14th century is an act of reparation and recognition. Barcelona is and claims to be a city of peace, diverse, plural and that gives visibility to all the silenced voices".
