Look up. This inscription is a replica of that found when the neighborhood underwent construction in the 19th century. It refers to and pays homage to Rabbi Samuel Ha-Sardi, who donated a large amount of money to the Hekdesh, charity deed.
Hekdesh were private charity deeds. They generated money through rent and donations, which went exclusively to charity. For poor children who couldn’t read, those who couldn’t afford marriage or even those who couldn’t afford burials. People would leave money to the Hekdesh in their will.
Institutions such as these, give us a window to a generous community, which had enough autonomy to care for its people.
