A few words on the Synagogue Mayor
Carrer Marlet, in front of the Hekdesh
The location of the former Synagogue Mayor remains a contested topic among historians, archaeologists and researchers. In the 1990s, a museum claiming to be located on the site of the former Synagogue Mayor was opened. Shortly afterwards, other historians contended that the synagogue was probably located elsewhere, in a nearby restaurant. We do know that it was much bigger, and had a women's section attached. Barcelona had an important and thriving religious community. Solomon ben Adret, (1235-1310), Rashba, student of the great Nahmanides of Girona, served at Barcelona’s Synagogue Major for 50 years.
