Los Conversos
Carrer Ferran
It’s important to note that the Jewish community in Barcelona ended a century before the official expulsion of 1492. By then, there were several generations of Converso families living in Barcelona. After the attacks, Conversos were forbidden to live in the area of the Call Mayor, and many of this new community of conversos settled in the area of the Call Menor and its surrounds. These conversos kept to themselves, did business with each other, married amongst themselves, and continued functioning in a community manner. The Spanish Inquisition was created in 1478 to target converted Jews who were still practicing Judaism. They used violent and brutal methods, public humiliation, torture and death, trying to bribe and persuade neighbours turn against each other ultimately to turn the Conversos in. It lasted well past the expulsion of 1482, many generations in from the original converted Jews. These people were stuck in a limbo, no longer Jewish, but not entirely Christian either, their status as ‘new Christians’ would mark their daily lives.
