The Cathedral, joint initiatives
The Cathedral
In 2019, Jewish cultural platform Mozaika started to work with the Cathedral of Barcelona in order to carry out Jewish-Christian interfaith initiatives. From this initial collaboration the idea arose of creating a museum exhibit centered around the thousands of documents that the Cathedral has on the medieval Jewish community of Barcelona. The Cathedral of Barcelona hosts over 40,000 medieval parchments, of which thousands pertain to the Jewish community of the city. Such a volume of medieval archival documentation is extremely rare in Europe. This collection is now being exposed to a wide audience through a small exhibition which will be permanently displayed at the Barcelona Cathedral. This project involved reviewing, translating, and sometimes digitizing hundreds of documents, a process which yielded some academic breakthroughs in and of itself. All of the knowledge compiled through the process then had to be condensed into a coherent narrative that would put the Jewish perspective front and center.
