Former Jewish Humanities Gimnazjum - 12 Zamojska Street
Dawne Żydowskie Gimnazjum Humanistyczne
The boys’ and girls’ Jewish Humanities Gimnazjum, founded by Szymon and Róża Szper, functioned at 12 Zamojska Street from 1916 to 1933.
As Konrad Bielski, a poet and teacher at the Gymnasium, recalls in his book Bridge Over Time:
The school was located at Zamojska Street in a small one-storey house, it was co-educational, with, however, a significant majority of girls. [The owner of the school, Mrs Szperowa, came almost every day and took an active part in the life of the gymnasium. I attended their various games - "Hanukkah" and "Purim" evenings - and gave regular (at their request) talks on contemporary literature, with a special focus on poetry. I remember well that first matriculation exam of mine at Szperowa. The written exam took place, for lack of a suitable room, in the premises of a Jewish social club on Szopena Street. [After the matriculation, the father of one of Katzenelenbogen's students held a party at his home for the graduates and the teaching body. The party took place in the large flat of his house on Lubartowska Street. The table was set with various specialities. Lots of chocolates, sweets, cakes, sweet wines and liqueurs. When the host noticed the slight grimace on my face, he smiled with understanding and immediately a delicious pejsachówka, herring, fish and other appetisers appeared on the table in front of me. After dinner there was also a delicious cigar.
The night was warm, a beautiful June day. I was sitting on the balcony in the company of my pupils. They were talking to me, dreaming, making plans for the future. At that moment, I was the only Pole, not only in this large company, but also in the whole house, and I suppose in the whole district. At that time, could I have foreseen, could I have imagined in my most nightmarish dreams - what would happen in a dozen or so years. That all those who are talking to me at the moment will die a horrible and violent death, that there will be no trace left of them and that even the external appearance of the street will have changed completely. That I am sitting in a place that will be a cemetery.
