The State Archive in Lublin
Archiwum PaĆstwowe w Lublinie
We enter Królewska Street and immediately face the Lublin Cathedral, once a Jesuit church, erected in the Lublin Baroque style between 1586 and 1604. Students of the Jesuit College located nearby started anti-Jewish riots on numerous occasions in the 17th century. The city records mention, for instance, that in 1604 “students assaulted the synagogue, houses and the hospital during Jewish prayers, severely wounded and beat up a few Jews, broke doors and windows, as well as committed other acts of violence and caused other damage.” Similar acts took place in 1623, 1635 and 1646.The former Jesuit College now houses the State Archive, which stores numerous documents on the history of the city and the region, including documentation related to the history of Lublin Jews.
