St. Caetan's Cathedral
Собор Св. Каэтана
Saint Kaetan Cathedral: The Role of Catholicism and the Coexistence of Religions Left-bank Ukraine was for a long time part of the Rzeczpospolita, and the role of Poland in this territory was significant. Behold before us the oldest Catholic church in Moldova. In the manuscript «Act of foundation of the church in Rashkov», dated 1749, states that Prince Joseph Lubomirski announced his decision to build a church of stone. In 1791 the church was consecrated in the name of St. Catherine by the Armenian-Catholic Archbishop of Lvov, Yakub Valerian Tumanovich. So the church became Armenian-Catholic and then, when there were fewer Armenians, it became the spiritual center of the large Catholic community of the region. In 1901, the church had over a thousand parishioners from Rashkov and the surrounding villages.  The church is an example of 18th century Polish Catholic architecture with Baroque elements. The two towers of the church are decorated with pilasters of Ionic and Tuscan order. In the course of the anti-religious campaign of the Soviet authorities in 1932 the church was closed. It was temporarily active again in the 40s and 50s. It was later used by the local authorities as a granary, then as a carpenter's workshop. In 1990 the building was given to the Catholic community. And now dozens of parishioners gather here for services to the sound of an electric organ, and charitable work is underway. When we wish and can, we go inside the cathedral and see its interior. After that we walk down the path and come out on Jewish Street (no name written) and go in the direction of the Synagogue, which is well visible due to its impressive size.
