The Jewish School Hascharath Zwi
The Jewish School Hascharath Zwi
In 1895, a modern, spacious school building was built for the Jewish school Hascharath Zwi at Im Westendorf 15. The school, which had existed since the late 18th century, had been located in various sites, including in the street Judenstrass No. 25, and in the Klaus at Rosenwinkel No. 18. The new school was located in a rear building which had a yard connecting it to the Plantage Park. The community administration was located in the front building, which also housed apartments for teachers and Rabbis. The third generation of Rabbis from the Auerbach family and members of the Baer family were now active on Hascharath Zwi’s school board. They were passionate about education. Samuel Baer (1811 – 1870) had been a teacher at the school from 1832 up until his death in 1870. In 1895, when the new school building was being built, it was his oldest son Emil Baer (1850-1922) who was particularly involved in the field of education.
