Stones of Remembrance
The Stones of Remembrance list the names and dates of birth of all the Jews who were deported from Halberstadt to the death camps on April 12 and November 22, 1942. Among them are also 19 children and young people. They had neither succeeded in escaping from Germany with their parents, nor in being rescued by the Kindertransporte to England or the Jugend-Aliyah to Palestine. Among the children who were rescued by means of a Kindertransport were: Walter Beverstein - he was rescued on a Kindertransport. (He died in Florida in 2013) Marianne Bloch - she lives in the USA, is in close contact with Ruth Oppenheimer. Lilly Cohn - she came to Halberstadt frequently from 2000. (She passed away in New York in the summer of 2019). Sally Edelnand - lives in Luton near London. He is connected with the Halberstadt club as a Rotarian Benno Gocman - he was able to escape to London with his parents. (He died in 2020) Helga Heilmann was able to flee with her parents via Sweden and England to the USA Max, Erna, Lasar, Sally and Hans Knopf were able to flee with their parents to England (They all passed away) On April 12, 1942, fifteen-year-old Ida Edelnand, the younger sister of Sally Edelnand, was deported with her parents, as well as Regina Kowalski, who was the same age, and her mother Henny. Ruth Lindheimer, née Oppenheimer, was taken in by the family of a judge and law professor in Cambridge. Her mother Nanny Lindheimer and grandmother Helene Lewin did not manage to escape, although the elevator, i.e. the movable property that was allowed to be exported, was already ready for transport in the port of Hamburg. On April 12, 1942, the two women were transported to the Warsaw Ghetto and murdered in Ausschwitz.
