Исконное Старое еврейское кладбище
The original Old Jewish Cemetery and the Memorial Sign for the 100th Anniversary of the 1903 pogromThe Beginning of the CemeteryWhen talking about the old Jewish cemeteries in Chisinau, we should first note that in 1773 there was a "Charter of the Jewish Burial Brotherhood of Chisinau," written in Hebrew, with 114 signatures. That is, even then there was a considerable community and a significant cemetery - on the left bank of the river Byk.Thus, the current Old cemetery would be more accurately called the New. It was officially opened in 1825, although the first burials may be about 300 years old, as evidenced by some stelae. In January 1958, in connection with the general plan for the reconstruction of Chisinau, part of the Jewish cemetery was assigned to a park. - In January 1958, in connection with the general plan for the reconstruction of Chisinau, part of the Jewish cemetery was set aside for the creation of a park. Only two months were allotted for the reburial. Many monuments turned out to be derelict. Some were moved to the upper part of the cemetery, others were used to build the new wall.Monument to the victims of the pogromA monument of red and gray stone is now easily found in Alunelul Park (Alunelul), visible from afar. It is a memorial to the victims of the 1903 pogrom. Part of it was created for the 90th anniversary of the pogrom by Semen Shoichet and Naum Epelbaum, already known to you. The central image on the red granite stele is the tragically split Magen David. The 100th anniversary was marked not only by a new date, 2003, but also by a second piece of gray granite monument with Menorah, thalite and the words "You are our sorrow and eternal memory. Next to the monument is an information panel with text in Romanian, Russian and English, which provides historical background information. It is a monument rather than a grave: many of the remains and the desecrated Torah scrolls were moved to the upper part of the cemetery, the latter being buried in the crypt of Rebbe Tzirelson.
