Monument to the Victims of Fascism
Памятник жертвам фашизма
The monument was created in the 1970-80s.It is located near the place where executions were carried out in the period 1941 -1944.In 1941-1942, Jews were mainly shot - prisoners of the Chisinau ghetto. The killings were carried out in an abandoned mine, which is located below the monument.About 30 thousand corpses were found there, several thousand of them were Jews who were killed during the occupation. The rest of the killed are representatives of the Roma, Ukrainians, Russians, Moldovans, etc. They were killed in the period before August 1944. It is possible that some victims were thrown into the mine still alive or wounded. A monument to the victims of fascism was erected on a vacant lot, near the highway leading towards the city of Orhei; today it is Kalya Orheyului Street. The author of the monument is the famous artist and sculptor monumentalist Aurel David. The monument is unusual, like all the works of this author. It consists of two hands stretching into the sky, shot and wrapped in barbed wire. In the 90s of the last century, all the metal parts of the monument were stolen - apparently, they were handed over for scrap. Later, a major restoration was carried out; architect S. Shoikhet and sculptors V. Zhiglitsky and V. Zaitsev took part in the restoration work and changing the surrounding landscape. Since then, mourning events related to the tragedy of the Holocaust have been held near the monument on the territory of the complex.
