An expensive proposition
Maritime Retirement Fund
The building of the Maritime Retirement Fund was erected on a piece of land that used to be Themistocleous Square. The construction lasted four years (1927-1930) and cost 30 million drachmas. The six-story building served as a branch office of the National Bank of Greece. The director’s office and customer service was on the ground floor. The General Manager was on the first floor while the employee shower facilities were on the third floor. The treasury was in the semi-basement. In 1954 the Maritime Retirement Fund acquired a large part of the building from the National Bank at a cost of 10,251,548 drachmas.
