Runners
Old Post Office
Ioannis Kapodistrias established the first post offices in 1828 in Aegina, Nafplio, Epidauros, and Syros. It took three days for mail from Athens to reach Nafplio with the use of regular “runners.” The first runner left Athens each Monday night. On Tuesday he delivered the mail to a new runner in Megara, who reached Kalamaki the same evening. A third runner completed the route to Nafplio on Wednesday. The first stamps were printed in 1860 and at the end of the decade the railroad was recruited to facilitate the delivery of the mail.
