Odeon of Lyon
The Roman Odeon of Lugdunum is located next to the ancient theatre. Only Vienne (the town from where the first Roman colonists left to found Lugdunum) has a similar complex in Gaul. The thick wall surrounding the cavea indicates that the odeon was partially roofed. It had a capacity of three thousand and was used for music performances and recitations. It dated from the reign of Hadrian (early to mid 2nd century) and was elegantly adorned with eleven different types of material, including colourful marble. When the Romans abandoned the neighbourhoods on the hill and relocated on the river's shores, the odeon was semi-buried. At the same time, the parts that remained visible were carted away and used as construction material in churches and bridges. The odeon was re-discovered along with the nearby theatre and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
