The omnibus
Piraeus station
The first contract to establish regular communications between Athens and Piraeus was signed in 1835. The Bavarian Strong would organize a system of omnibuses. These were horse-drawn carriages that run between Athens and Piraeus four times a day. It took them one hour to cover the distance from the intersection of Aiolou and Ermou in downtown Athens, along Piraeus Street, to the port of Piraeus. The luggage was carried on the roof. Smoking and transportation of dogs was prohibited. A bugle notified the passengers about the omnibus’ departure.
