The first arena
Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules
Lyon was home to the first amphitheatre in Gaul. The Romans used these venues for entertainment, performances, and sports (think of the Colosseum in Rome). Tiberius built the relatively small amphitheatre in 19 CE. It had a capacity of 1,800 seats, so it would not have satisfied the needs of the local population. It was more than enough, though, for the delegations of the sixty Gallic tribes that gathered in Lugdunum to celebrate the cult of Rome and Augustus. At the start of the 2nd century, the authorities added two galleries that raised the capacity to 20,000 spectators. In 177 CE, the arena witnessed the martyrdom of Saints Blandina and Pothinus during the persecution that resulted in the death of 48 Christians.
