Lyon has two hills: the “hill that works” (La Croix-Rousse) and the “hill that prays” (Fourvière). The former got its name from a 16th-century reddish-brown stone cross. It was mostly undeveloped until the 18th century when the silk workshops moved here from across the river. Most buildings in the neighbourhood have a more significant internal height than other areas of Lyon to house the tall silk looms and numerous traboules for safely transporting silk. The silk labourers (canuts) lived and worked in terrible conditions and staged many uprisings to secure better conditions. These days are long gone, and the area is home to a vibrant cultural scene. In 1995, the artist cooperative CitéCréation decided to paint the Fresque des Lyonnais, a large mural covering 800 m2 (8611 sq. ft.) of wall to revitalise a busy district of Lyon.
