The Only Synagogue is still in use
The Choral Synagogue of Vilnius
As mentioned earlier, this synagogue stood out from the others – the prayers were well organized, accompanied by a choir – this is the reason why the synagogue has been and still is called “The Choral”. Around 120 Jews would gather to pray in the synagogue in 1933. The synagogue was also unique because it was the only one which functioned in Vilnius during the years of Soviet occupation. Although the true story of the synagogue differs, the memorial plaque installed on the wall of synagogue in 2003 indicates, in Yiddish and Lithuanian, that the synagogue was built in 1903 by the misnagdim followers of the Vilna Gaon (1720-1797). It is yet another, even though paradoxical, proof of how much the history of Vilnius Jews is influenced by the paradigm of Vilna Gaon Elijah.
