The Former Residents of Saint Nicholas Street
Residents of Saint Nicholas Street
“Symon Moyżeszowicz, furrier, wife Rywka, servant Chaja Izaak Wulfowicz, butcher, wife, two sons, two daughters, and a grandmother.Faywisz Rafałowicz, wife Judyt, son Josel, daughter Hinda, and a servant Gitka from Ostryny”
This street is named after the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas, built by German merchants already in 1345. It was the first brick Church to be built in Lithuania, even before the official baptism of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (1387). Unbelievable when considered from the present day perspective, this street was actually one of three streets allocated to Jews for the settlement in 1633, when the residential quarter was being formed in Vilnius. The Church of St. Nicholas found itself in an area densely populated by Jews since the latter were reluctant to settle in the allocated quarter and chose the premises of the neighbouring streets more willingly.
