Destruction during the WW2
Vilna Gaon
The buildings of the former Jewish quarter were slightly damaged during the battles for Vilnius in 1944. In July of the same year, soviet soldiers burnt-down the part of quarter surrounding the Great Synagogue. The crumbling leftovers of the quarter, including the remains of the Great Synagogue and one side of the Vokiečių st. were completely demolished in 1950. Vokiečių street was widened, a row of new houses with parking lots and children playgrounds were built and a kindergarten opened where the Great Synagogue used to stand.
