The Symbol of Pride
Proselyte Walentyn Potcoki - Ger Tzedek
This legend spread widely among Eastern European Jews, and became a symbol of pride in their faith. Ger Tzedek (Heb. גר צדק), the righteous convert, was buried next to the famous Gaon of Vilna, and publicly commemorated on the same day as the death of the latter. The legend remains alive today and one can find motifs of the legend in the contemporary Lithuanian literature, for example, in the popular trilogy by Kristina Sabaliauskaitė “Silva Rerum”.
