Suburb outside the city
Wielka Pohulanka
In 1856 the author of the first guidebook for Vilnius, Adam Honory Kirkor (1818-1886), wrote - "And now to Pohulanka. This suburb is open and fun, although the road is sandy, going up and up outside the city. On the left side of the street there is a mound with a convenient alley for crossing… Walking further towards the cordon, along an alley of trees on Pohulanka, we can see several beautiful wooden and brick houses with gardens… Here stood a house called Pohulanka, inside you could have found an inn". Both etymology of the word pohulanka (from Rus. гулять, guljat, – taking a walk, party) and the abundance of inns located here made this street and the entire neighbourhood associated with entertainment.
