A glorious tomb
The vaulted tomb of Minyas
Standing majestically by the foothills of Mount Akondio, the monumental vaulted tomb of the 13th C. B.C., known from ancient historical sources as “the treasure of Minyas”, shows us the power of the Mycenaean palatial center of Orchomenos. The tomb, the closest parallel we have to the vaulted tomb of Atreus in Mycenae, is above ground, with a 30m entrance path and an impressive frontage. It originally consisted of a main circular chamber, 14m in diameter, and a quadrilateral side room. The internal walls of the tomb were decorated with inserted bronze rosettes, while the ceiling of the side room was decorated with embossed bronze spirals, rosettes, and papyrus flowers. However, from the podium that survives under the center of the dome, we see the tomb was also used, after the 4thCent. B.C., as an altar for offerings to members of Phillip II’s family, great benefactors of the city who, later on, equally honored the Roman Emperors.
