Description
Carnival in Greece
The painting portrays a family moment in a house of common people, where they are celebrating carnival. The mask on the floor and the people in disguise who are entering the room reveal the theme of the painting. The people are sitting in a circle around the table, just as it happens in a family gathering. The people in disguise are entering from the right: some of them are wearing pelts and masks of animals, some others have painted their faces, while some others influenced by the western customs are dressed up as harlequins. The children look scared, while the adults are laughing. Galaktoboureko, the sweet of the carnival, is in the middle of the table. Gyzis uses the natural light entering from the window to lighten the place and especially the sweet, by creating contrast between the light and the shadow. Otto’s faint portrait which is hanging on the wall creates an anachronism to the period when Otto ruled Greece.
